Algebra 2
COURSE SYLLABUS
2012-2013
INSTRUCTOR: Charles Garcia

Course Description:

Algebra II continues the systematic development of topics covered in Algebra I as well as additional topics including complex number system, theory of equations, conic sections, logarithms, matrices and determinants.  Problem solving techniques and higher order thinking skills will be stressed.  This course is recommended for students wishing to take Pre Calculus, Calculus, or Statistics.

Textbook:

ALGEBRA 2 by McDougal Littell is available to students by request only.  A book is not assigned to students due to the fact that the district uses a curriculum called CSCOPE.  All worksheets and assignment combined are compiled into a notebook, which becomes the students “Book”.

Supplies Required:

One Binder(at least 1”), notebook paper, pencils, box of tissue, 4 AAA Batteries, 1 ream of copy paper, and a graphing calculator (TI-84 plus) is desired but not required.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned each class period and is due at the beginning of the following class (unless otherwise specified). You will be expected to show all work using PENCIL, and head all papers with – Name, Class/Period, Date and Assignment.

Make-Up/Missed Work:

If you are absent from class (due to illness, sports, etc.), it is your responsibility to obtain any missing assignments. AC Jones policy, the time allowance for taking tests or turning in assignments following an excused absence from class shall be equal to the number of classes missed due to the absence. You will receive a failing grade for all assignments missed or tests given during the period of an unexcused absence.

Grading Policy:

Student grades will be based on the following:  class work and homework (15%), quizzes (15%), and tests (70%). Interim grade details will be shared so that you will know your progress halfway through each marking period. Grading will follow the district scale: A (90-100%); B (80-89%); C (70-79%); D (60-69%); F (below 60%).

Daily Classroom Routine:

  • As soon as you arrive in class: sharpen pencils, record your homework assignment, and then begin the warm-up activities listed on the board or overhead.
  • Place your math binder and pencils on your desk.
  • Place items for other classes under your desk.
  •  Remain seated at all times unless instructed to move for the purposes of group work, computer work, etc.
  • Trash may be thrown away as you enter or exit class only.
  • Hall passes will be given on a limited basis at the teacher’s discretion.

Classroom Rules:

Be on time; be prepared; be respectful; candy, food, and drinks are not allowed. In addition to these rules, students are also expected to follow all ACJHS rules. Consequences include verbal warnings, phone calls home, removal from class, and referrals to school administrators.

Communication:

If questions or concerns arise, I may be contacted by note, phone (362-6000), or e-mail.  I will do my best to return any messages within 24-48 hours.  I am looking forward to a fun and productive year!
